What exactly is synaestetic? Well, it’s basically a neurological condition in which stimulation of one sensory leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory.  For example, hearing colors or seeing sounds.

We thought that term fit in perfectly with the evening of live music & visual art we have planned for you on the 16th!  Where 16 visual artists from in and around the Kansas City area will be displaying work that is inspired by, interpretive of, or representational of music.  Original works will be for sale as well as a limited number of poster-sized (18″ x 24″) prints for only $10 each.

The music for this evening will be provided by The Wires, Kansas City’s own alternative string duo featuring Laurel Morgan (In The Pines) and Sascha Groschang; Dead Voices, the latest collaboration of Dave Regnier (The Afterparty), Jason Beers (The Brannock Device), Mike Stover (Mr. Marco’s V7) and Matt Richey; and the debut of Atlantic Fadeout, a new band including Chris Meck & Abigail Henderson (The Gaslights, Tiny Horse), Amy Farrand (American Catastrophe, e.i.o.) and Dutch Humphrey (Elkheart).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

There will also be a large canvas set up where all are welcome (artist or not) to paint!  Our only requirement is that you paint in response to the music you are listening to.  There will be a raffle drawing at the end of the evening and the winner will be the recipient of the completed piece.

Conceptually, it is hardly new to integrate the aural into the visual or the visual into the aural experience. Artists have been challenging how we perceive and experience our sensory world for ages.  We do, however, hope this is the beginning of many opportunities for visual artists, musicians, their collectors or fans, and their supporting organizations and businesses to interact with each other, and to raise awareness in our community of the relationship between visual art and musical creation and performance. We hope to stimulate dialogue between arts organizations across disciplines — sharing ideas, increasing community awareness, and encouraging new relationships that challenge us all to be innovative and responsive to the communities we serve.

Participating artists are: Paul Andrews, Andrea Bledsoe, Derrick Breidenthal, Héctor Casanova, Ben Chlapek, Clare Doveton, Lori Raye Erickson, GEAR, Jud Kite, Eric Lindquist, Forester Michael, Molly Murphy, Timothy Rowland, Lou Ruzich, Tyson Schroeder, and Davin Watne.
